Folk Remedies for Anxiety

There are plenty of items that claim to reduce anxiety significantly. These come in all sorts of forms from pills to dissolving gel capsules for relieving stress on the go. If you search around you will find Bach Rescue Remedy is mentioned quite often along with different brands of similar mood enhancing pills. These brands include Now, Moodboost, and many others that have essentially the same ingredients.

But what about L-theanine, you may say. If you suffer from extreme anxiety and have heard of this then you probably drink nothing but green tea to try and reap the benefits of it. I have switched to hot green tea for most of my drinking needs while I’m at home as well.

Saint John’s Wort? I have tried that as well. It is generally in the mood enhancing pills in small doses. If you check stores like CVS and Walgreens you can find it easily in the vitamin section in pill form.


Do these things work? If you’re like me you have tried everything not to use actual medicine to help yourself. I have spent years trying to heal myself naturally by using these type of products and I’m more than willing to share my results. They don’t work.


I have been using Bach Rescue Remedy Pearls for around a month now and I actually thought it was working until one dreaded morning. I was running late for work and forgot to take one. I was nearly halfway to work before I realized it and I was immediately struck with horror. I worked the day and I didn't feel too much different from when I was taking the Pearls. I have tried them on and off to compare to find that there was no difference. I also tried Now Mood Support. Unfortunately this had the same result.


L-theanine seemed promising, but I’m not sure how well it works. I have heard that you would have to drink an impossible amount of tea in order to get enough to make any real difference. I will say that drinking hot green tea does have a very relaxing effect on me. I’m sure it’s only that it’s a hot drink rather than the L-theanine though. I have started to bring a coffee mug full of hot tea to work work every morning and I have to say that it really helps me.


Out of the products I have tried I have been very disappointed that most of them have felt like placebos rather than something really helpful. I am not trying to discourage anyone from trying one of these products because there are plenty of people that have said they work wonders for them. What may work for you may not work for me and vice versa.


Hopefully one day there will be an all natural product that can knock out our anxiety as well as prescription medicine seems to be able to, but I doubt it. Until then we just have to pray that God will lead us in the direction He wants us to go even if that direction is prescription medication.

Think About Who You Answer To

The biggest problem with anxiety is that even when you aren't feeling nervous you are still suffering. Anxiety is often connected with deep depression and that is really not surprising. Social anxiety makes you feel broken and alone long after the nervousness fades. Simple interactions can leave you questioning yourself for weeks.

I tend to replay past conversations over and over in my mind. I should have said this. I should have done that. Constant questioning leaves you in a state of doubt of whether or not you can do anything at all without failing.

This means when I’m not feeling anxious I’m feeling depressed about feeling anxious at some other time. It feels like your life is a deep hole you can’t escape, but you can! My grandparents are very important to me and my grandmother especially is very supportive. She always tells me about being stressed out over a job to the point of nearly having a panic attack. My grandfather, being the logical man he is, sat her down and asked her what the worst thing that could happen was. She said she could get fired and his response was “so what.”

I think this is a good way to look at life. I think that I look at life and every event in it way too seriously. I feel that anxiety comes from pride. I know mine does. It’s very important that I do everything perfectly and because of that my assumption is that everyone else feels the same. I am not perfect and neither are you. Setting the bar slightly higher than you can achieve can be useful to push yourself further but the goal we have set for ourselves has only caused us grief. We will fall flat on our faces every time if we think anything less than perfect is unacceptable.  What Jesus did for us was because it is impossible for us to be anywhere near perfect.

That anxiety you feel may never disappear and you may have horrible bouts of depression multiple times a year but that is no reason to give up on yourself. You are not perfect and you will never be. It’s okay to make mistakes. So what if you stutter while speaking at work or can’t type a single word when your boss is standing over your shoulder? Everyone has flaws and God won’t blame you for it. Since God is who we answer to, don’t be worried about all the worldly mistakes you and I will undoubtedly make or the people that may want to judge you for them.

When You Have Social Anxiety

As christians should we have social anxiety? Many people will tell you that you have to just trust God and everything will get better, but for those of us suffering this is only a frustrating answer. Not only does it make us feel like we have no faith, it also makes us feel like there is actually a way to rid ourselves of these painful feelings that we just simply can’t tap into.

I have struggled with social anxiety for years and I only have vague memories of not feeling very uncomfortable around people. I feel like externally I look okay but on the inside I feel paralyzed and sick. I always prayed for God to make me well but it didn’t happen.I got bitter. I blamed God for my problems and stopped trying to improve at all. Only recently have I come back to my faith.

Do all Christians with anxiety have the same fate? Will we all become bitter and hate God for the unanswered prayers? I won’t be dishonest or sugar coat the way my feelings were years ago. I hated God so much that I would have spat in His face if He decided to visit me. I’m so thankful that I always knew He was there though, and I think that’s the only thing that has saved me.

Anyone that has suffered from social anxiety knows that life can turn into hell at a flip of a switch. You will be fine one second and then suddenly you feel like you’ve been shut down. You repeat your favorite comforting verse over and over with no relief. You pray and nothing happens. You feel like nothing will change.

I’m not an expert in anything and I don’t feel like I know much more than anyone else, so I can only offer you the small amount of advice I’ve gleaned from painful trial and error over the years.

First, take baby steps all the way. Do things outside of your comfort zone often even if it’s only making eye contact with someone in the grocery store. I’ve found that maintaining eye contact with people while talking to them is a real confidence builder for me. That may be because it makes me so uncomfortable but every time I do it I feel I’ve accomplished something. Find something small that makes you anxious and practice doing it as often as possible. Start conversations with strangers if you can and smile. Anyone that knows me knows I hate smiling but it helps.

Another thing is to fake it. Fake what? Confidence. This may seem deceptive but in reality it isn’t. If you wear a mask long enough that becomes who you are. If you want to do something you have to do it. Thinking about something you want to do and not doing it will only drive you further into that hole you’re in. Take a stand and decide that you are going to do something outside of your comfort zone every day and you will build your confidence back to where it needs to be.

But what about God, you ask. Shouldn’t we as Christians be praying? Of course you should. Prayer should be a part of your day regardless and you should definitely ask God for help. The problem is that people pray and nothing happens. They get mad and don’t want to mess with it anymore. If you put in the work, God will pull you the rest of the way through, but you have to be willing to start it.  Just being we have the Holy Spirit in us doesn’t mean we no longer have to work.

Reading Your Bible Quickly

Most Christians have not read through the entire Bible even though they have tried time and time again. I feel like the best solution to this is to get an audio Bible. Audio Bibles are not nearly as popular as they should be for Christians. They allow us to make progress through our Holy Book while on our way to work and while doing mundane things around the house.


The first time I read through the Bible I used an audio Bible while walking, driving, and also while mowing the lawn. Using this to supplement my regular reading helped me to finish the entire Bible in around two and a half months.


I found that reading the Bible that quickly and immediately beginning again helped me gain a better understanding of the content. Although there were parts that felt boring and felt tedious but everytime I marked my place in my physical Bible I was astounded at how much progress I was making, which is always encouraging.


The other thing that I feel helped me was realizing that studying and reading are not the same thing. Reading should be just that. Looking up cross references and making notes are wonderful but that shouldn't interfere with your reading time. If you want to study  do it after your reading.


When is the best time to read? Some people have a specific time set up so that they can have their Bible study. This is great for study and prayer but for reading reading it isn't as effective to only read at certain times. To read more you have to read all the time. Do you have ten minutes to kill before your favorite show comes on? Read a chapter. Are you cooking and waiting on the oven to preheat? Another chapter. This is reading, not studying. It's okay to read it like you would another book as long as you take the time to study it later.

Once you begin to read your Bible more you find that you look forward to listening and reading and it starts becoming ingrained into the way you think. If you're upset with God about something that’s happening in your life you will remember Job and how you have to have faith through the rough times to be blessed later. When you feel like God is giving you impossible tasks you will think of Moses when he was leading the people out of Egypt. The Bible is the only thing that will make you understand that God truly has a reason for you to be on this Earth and if you spend time reading it you will find you more comfort in your life through the hard times.
